Tailor’s Bunion/Bunionette

The quality of my life has changed.

"DL Walker has been amazing. She patiently listened to my problems and was very interested in evaluating me and getting to the root of my foot pain. She tailored a program that would work for me and continued to update my plan as I progressed.

I have seen significant improvement and the quality of my life has changed. I have seen a significant reduction in pain and I have changed my footwear, so I continue to see progress. I am able to take the ideas she has taught me and head off problems now as they arise. Thank you DL!"

Tailor’s Bunion/Bunionette

Explanation and symptoms

DL Walker Consultant

A tailor’s bunion, also known as a bunionette, is a bunion located on the side of the fifth toe joint, called the 5th metatarsophalangeal joint or the 5th MTP joint.

This condition can be very painful, in the 5th Metatarsophalangeal joint, or in the area around this joint, including the toes.

Research shows that Tailor’s Bunions/bunionettes are linked to a decreased quality of life, walking problems and an increase incidence of falling.

The good news is that Tailor Bunions are the easiest bunion to treat naturally without surgery, medications, or orthotics because the natural treatment involves 4-6 joints, compared to potentially 57 joints with other bunions.

Special footwear to redistribute forces

  1. Injections/medications: Injections and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications will help to relieve pain.
  2. Orthotics: Are designed to help offset the forces of the bunion rubbing the shoe and causing pain with footwear.
  3. Toe Spacers: Artificially align the joint.
  4. Accommodating footwear: Shoes with a wider toe box will help decrease friction of the bunion on the shoes.
  5. Surgery: See below.

Tailor Bunion Surgery

It is considered a successful foot surgery, with a 85-96% satisfaction rate. Surgery, however, is only performed after other conservative and potentially costly options have failed such as injections, medications, spacers, and orthotics.

Surgery not be covered by your health care insurance, recovery time is 8 weeks, and like any surgery you are at risk for minor and serious complications that are associated with surgery which include; infection, amputation, and death.
